Years of History

Kings Theatre is Brooklyn's crown jewel of live entertainment — a breathtaking 1929 movie palace restored to its full glory and reopened in 2015. Designed by the renowned firm Rapp & Rapp in the grand French Renaissance Revival style, its gilded interiors drew inspiration from the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theatre features soaring domed ceilings, ornate plaster walls, sweeping staircases, and a glazed terracotta façade that stops passersby on Flatbush Avenue. A $94 million restoration preserved every detail of its original splendor while integrating state-of-the-art acoustics and production infrastructure.

To walk through its doors is to step into another era — while being treated to a world-class show.

and gilt

1929
"Enter, and you can convince yourself that you are both at the center of the world and transcending it." — New York Magazine

1929

Loew's Kings Theatre opens on September 7, 1929 in Flatbush, Brooklyn — one of five Loew's "Wonder Theatres" in the New York area and the 25th largest movie theatre ever built in the United States.

1950s

A young Barbra Streisand works as an usher at the Kings. Chuck Schumer and Carole King hold their high school graduations in the grand auditorium. The venue becomes a cultural cornerstone of Brooklyn.

1977

The theatre closes its doors after decades of declining attendance, left untouched and largely intact — a sleeping giant preserved by benign neglect.

2012

Added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, officially recognizing Kings Theatre as an irreplaceable landmark of American culture and architecture.

2015

After a $94 million restoration, Kings Theatre reopens on February 3, 2015 with Diana Ross headlining the inaugural concert — fully restored to its original grandeur and transformed for the modern era.
