The Peter Jay Sharp Theatre, originally known as the Symphony Theatre, opened in 1918 and has served as a beloved cultural landmark for generations of New Yorkers.

It was here in 1978 that Symphony Space was born — founders Isaiah Sheffer and Allan Miller rented the space for a single extraordinary day: "Wall to Wall Bach," a free 12-hour music festival with full audience participation. That spirit of openness and community has defined the venue ever since.

Today the theatre hosts a wide range of performances including classical and contemporary music, literary readings, dance, film, and children's programming. Located on the upper level of Symphony Space, it is accessible through the main lobby and features wheelchair accessible seating and aisle transfer seats throughout.
